Care Guide

Flytrap + Pitcher Plant Care

Sunlight: You will need your plant in full sunlight 100%. Outside on a sunny porch will be optimal. The next factor to keeping your carnivorous plant alive and thriving is:

Nutrient Free Water, free from microscopic particles. You can measure your water by using a TDS meter. However, if you don’t have that kind of meter, you can get distilled or reverse osmosis water from your grocery store. Keep your tray with your carnivorous plant filled, you can let it dry out between fillings. Dormancy, beginners can sometimes think that their flytrap is slowly dying but the plant is actually sleeping or hibernating for the winter. This dormancy period begins in Late August to Late February, however they can last for a minimum of two and a half months.

Feeding, since carnivorous plants eat insects, most people think they should feed them meat. However, that is not healthy for them and the traps may turn black. If you want to feed them, feed sundews and flytraps small flies or fertilize with Maxsea Seaweed Fertilizer.

Soil, if you do need to repot your flytrap or sundew, we recommend potting in pure long fibered sphagnum moss. You can find them under the brand name Besgro Sphagnum Moss. I recommend just getting the 8L compressed brick for 2-3 plants that need repotting. However, we sell our flytraps in a Peat:Sand:Perlite mix, 3 parts peat, 2 parts sand, 2 parts perlite. Peat is easily found online but shouldn’t be used without Sand and Perlite. You will need to use a Pool Filter Sand, which is 100% inert Silica. A coarser sand is recommended too. Perlite is also easily found in hardware stores and online.

FAQ:

Why are some of my venus' flytrap's and pitcher plant traps getting smaller?

Most likely, it's beginning to go into dormancy. If not, it may be because there isn't enough light.

What is that little green stick coming out of my flytrap?

It's actually a flower stalk, they usually appear during the spring and is a sign that your plant is waking up.

Ok, should I cut the flower stalk?

If you want seed, then you should leave it. But it will suspend the growth of new traps. Beginners should cut it.

Why are my flytrap’s leaves turning green and the leaves getting bigger?

It’s not getting enough sunlight, put it out in more light but gradually increase it to prevent sunburn.

Why are the leaves/pitchers/traps on my flytrap and pitcher turning brown/black?

The leaves get old and eventually turn black.

Sundew Care:

Sunlight: You will need your sundew in part sunlight 50-75%. Outside on a sunny porch will be optimal. LED grow lights work well for tropical and temperate sundews, a 12-14 hour ON period works well. The next factor to keeping your carnivorous plant alive and thriving is:
